If the only thing stopping you from committing atrocities is the fear of punishment, eternal or not, you can’t really claim to be a good or righteous person. It’s that simple.
As an atheist, I think religion is necessary. It puts a layer of protection on society. Adds one more fear except prison into the mind of somebody before he tries to commit a crime. I'd have more examples if I wasn't so sleepy.
Also I consider those who use religion and misinterpret it for their own benefit deserve to be beheaded
It seems to me that many people have a psychological need for some all encompassing ideology that gives them some meaning, it also seems like this ideology needs people to show in some way they are part of it, usually by sacrificing some comfort.
In the past this need was coupled with God to explain everything and was packaged as religion so it fit people's needs perfectly.
Today many people are to informed to believe in a God so religion is out of the question but the need still exists.
As a result people invent what I call "none-theistic religions", Ideologies like veganism, 3rd wave feminism, social justice, extreme climate activism etc... even extreme atheism fits the bill.
Those Ideologies are common on the left because the right still has traditional religion.
And at least climate change activism is good if not to extreme and has its base in science.

He might have a point here, yet there are enough a**holes on this planet where the numbers aren't 0. And because of those a**holes we need someone to watch over and protect those whose numbers are 0.
