That's always the argument they make ''I'm a grown man upset over a black mermaid.'', never mind the fact that they've used that argument 500 times now about 500 different characters at this point. We're not upset over one of them, we're upset over the trend going on where everyone traditionally white is now black.

The point is and has been that the character was already established, it existed and no one wanted it to be changed in the first place.
No one's complaining about she-hulk being a woman because that character already existed, people are complaining how fucking bad the series is.
When the LotR series trailer came out people complained how un-lore-friendly the characters were, now that the series is out, everyone's complaining how bad it is.
No one's complaining about the diverse cast of the new GoT series because it was already established that that's how the world is.
No one's complaining that Disney cast a Chinese actress as Mulan in the live action movie, no one just went to see it because it was crap and Disney practically supported Chinese slave labor in the end credits.
If we had a black and strong mermaid in the Ariel univers with a good background story that we could use for a nice family Film that inspire young girls...
