On one hand: building strong concrete and brick structures that have minimal damage even after a category 4 storm
On the other hand: A literal army of construction vehicles that needs to be mustered every year for repairing wood and cardboard shacks
Why don't they just fucking learn and put utilities like electrical lines underground like in Europe instead of on wooden poles that blow over 5 times a year!
I swear this is like a super bowl or something
Their can prepare for this but they rather let it happen and fix the damage...
Money involved? I don't know
How about building houses and infrastructure that can withstand a hurricane when you live in a place that has frequent hurricanes?
Imagine when we finally go to mars but we dont build shelters that can survive the environment they are put in because “oh we can just repair it bla bla bla”
Such a waste of resources aswell that you have to completely rebuild something…
Its like American consumerism has gone so far that you dont even think about homes as a sacred place and its instead just a temporary commodity just like the ziplock bags you buy at the store every month…
My history teacher used to emphasize to us that we need to be useful. Everyone should at least have a skill that is actually useful to other people in terrible circumstances. Like, you should know how to swim, provide first aid, use common firearms (you don't have to own any, if you're scared of yourself, just know how to use them), drive manual, etc. He used to encourage us to join volunteer firefighters when we grow up and have extensive first aid kits in our cars.
I'm in my 30s now. Of course I know how to drive a manual, swim, provide first aid, shoot common pistols and AR's. However, seeing pictures like this, as well as russofascist invasion in Ukraine, I feel like if you can you should learn to drive a truck. Not to become a truck driver, but to have that ability to be useful.
