During his tenure as president, he suspended the writ of habeas corpus, and allowed the arrests of people under suspicion of being Confederate sympathizers. When Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled the suspension of the writ unconstitutional, Lincoln said and I quote, “fuck you!” and had him put on house arrest. Over 14,000 civilian arrests took place during his administration. He assured delegates that even in secession, he believed the free press was “necessary to a free government”, but as tensions arose, a true politician at heart, he took that section of the First Amendment that said “Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press” pulled his presidential cock out and pissed all over it. The Lincoln administration banned pro-peace newspapers from the mail, shut down newspaper offices and any printing materials that were in opposition to his views. Reporters were often intimidated or imprisoned if there was any sympathy for the South.
