I think I was never affected by it, simply because I always round the number in my head. Im always calculating with the higher cost so that I have some spare. When gas is 180,9 im fueling for 181. easy as this
Not only does it work, it can con you ito paying far more.
Example?
My local supermarket had a 7 pack of a famous brand choc bar at 99p, and a 12 pack of the same brand at £1.04. People were ignoring the 12 pack and buying the 7 pack; even though the 12 pack was almost double the size - for only 5pence more.
People who have an instinctive sense of numbers and proportions don't care about this gimmick. However, people who are bad at math see a greater difference in those prices than there actually is. The trick doesn't need to work with all people. If even just 1 in 100 customers puts one more item in the shopping cart, it's already worth it.
