Heating up the pot is just adding an extra step to the heat getting into the room, and you lose out on a fraction of energy as it goes from hot air, to the pot, then back to air again.
It is good only to preserve the heat of the candles in a smaller space. They won't be able to hit up the room but it can help to warm your hands or your feet if you can't make a fire.
The heat you get from the candles doesn't change. The pot only keeps some of that heat in place for a while, so when you're in a large and/or drafty room, it won't be dispersed as quickly
