I do understand to use conscripts for defense, especially when nazi germany attacked the USSR. But comparing this to the current situation by Putin is just pathetic and cruel to his own people. Russia has nothing to fear from the west. It has to fear its leader instead.

It was a way of showing in a movie with a time restriction the disposability of life in war, it was not meant to historically recreate a situation even the Soviets aren't that stupid they wouldn't waste rifles like that.

I know it is not the same war, but this reminded me of a youtube channel called TheGreatWarSeries. They covered the WWI week by week in great detail. Truly worth your time.
