Reminds me of Archon :) it also was a chess, but the winner of each "chess" piece was determined by a duel.

If you want some action in your chess, play Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate. It's on steam. It ain't exactly the biggest game out there, but it has some fun interactions between the pieces to make chess slightly more interesting. If you go for all achievements, guaranteed 20 hours of fun. And from my princing right now (30 reais), it should only be about 8 USD. Definitely worth it.

I had this game as a kid on the Game Boy. A chess game but instead of pieces you had characters, like wizards, warpigs and stuff like that. When you ate a piece you first had to win a card duel with them but the fight was influenced by what your character was (kinda like a pokemon fight on the old games). You also had some magic tricks. You had to move from castle to castle and make your way up. You didn't have to start over because there was a password system to move up. watch?v=JLTQS48HgpY
